The 25th ICOM General Conference – the first one to be held in Japan – officially kicked off its week-long session at the Kyoto International Conference Center on Sept. 2 to discuss various issues related to museums … and here we (The Yomiuri Shimbun and the Tsumugu Project) are, as promised earlier! If you can come to the Event Hall at the center, you will find us in our booth at the Museum Fair, which opened the same day.
At the booth, you will find newspapers, leaflets, brochures, flyers and more leaflets that explain The Yomiuri Shimbun’s involvement in art exhibitions and events, which started some time ago, as well as give you a better idea what the TSUMUGU Project — the operator of this web portal – is all about.
The Yomiuri Shimbun is not only a participant, but also a platinum sponsor of the International Council of Museums’ conference in Kyoto. At a sponsor session held the same day, Commissioner of Cultural Affairs Ryohei Miyata, Kyoto National Museum Director Johei Sasaki and The Yomiuri Shimbun Executive Adviser Shoichi Oikawa gathered on stage to talk about the Japanese media’s active involvement in promoting the arts and the importance of establishing a virtuous cycle of promoting, restoring and preserving traditional Japanese artwork, which are known to be extremely fragile.
Earlier this day, Crown Prince Akishino welcomed the 4,200 participants from 118 countries and territories at the opening ceremony of the event. The guests from around the world were also welcomed with a special noh performance, which featured recognized “living national treasure” or general holder of important intangible cultural properties Genjiro Okura (small hand drums).
