Pokémon inspires contemporary kogei (Japanese craft) artists

“POKÉMON X KOGEI — Playful Encounters of Pokémon and Japanese Craft,” which first ran at the National Crafts Museum (Kanazawa, Ishikawa Pref.) last year and later traveled to other cities, has now come to Tokyo. The exhibition showcasing craft work produced by 20 contemporary kogei (Japanese craft) artists themed on well known Pokémon (Pocket Monsters) like Pikachu and Jolteon has reopened at the Azabudai Hills Gallery (Minato Ward, Tokyo) on Nov. 1, 2024, and will run through Feb. 2, 2025.

Among the 80 or so works on display are “Pikachu’s Adventures in a Forest” by textile artist Reiko Sudo, “Charizard/Shigaraki Jar” by ceramicist Keiko Masumoto and “Transformable ornament, Rookidee/Corviknight” by metal work artist Yuki Tsuboshima.
