The one-of-a-kind portal should serve as your gateway to Japan\u2019s finest artwork and multifaceted culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With\ncooperation from two governmental agencies \u2013 Agency for Cultural Affairs and Imperial\nHousehold Agency \u2013 as well as national museums, the National Theatre and other\ncultural institutions, the portal \u2013 administered and operated by The Yomiuri\nShimbun (Tokyo) \u2013 will provide you with valuable art & culture-related information\nfrom Japan under the editorial supervision of connoisseurs from the Japanese art\nworld, the theater and other artistic fields. The portal will also serve as a\ndigital archive to preserve high-resolution images taken from Japan\u2019s\nsophisticated but fragile artwork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
TSUMUGU Gallery<\/strong>:\nHigh-resolution images of national treasure \u201cWind God and Thunder God Screens\u201d\n(Kennin-ji temple, Kyoto) and other works of art \u2013 paintings, Buddhist statues,\nsculptures and calligraphy \u2013 are posted here for you to observe the\nmasterpieces up close. A zoom-in device will allow you to focus on certain areas\nof the artwork as you read along expert comments on its artistic value, history\nand features.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What to See<\/strong>: This section\nof the portal \u2013 mostly intended for visitors to Japan \u2013 will introduce you to\nJapan\u2019s treasures currently on display in museums and on-going kabuki\nperformances, among other things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Learn<\/strong>: Renowned art writers including Mari Hashimoto and Sophie Richard (author of \u201cThe art lover\u2019s guide to Japanese museums\u201d), museum curators and culture writers of The Yomiuri Shimbun contribute essays, commentaries, interview articles, etc., to this section to make the portal uniquely educational and entertaining for viewers with a keen interest in Japan\u2019s traditional culture. Also included are reports on on-going repair work supported by the TSUMUGU Project of designated national treasure \u201cRaigo of Amida (Amitabha) and Twenty-five Attendants\u201d and other cultural assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jointly\ninitiated by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the Imperial Household Agency and\nThe Yomiuri Shimbun, the project officially kicked off in March 2019 with the\nopening of the Special Exhibition \u201cCultural Exchanges of the Emperor and\nEmpress: Sharing the Beauty of Japan\u201d (March 5 \u2013 April 29) at the Tokyo\nNational Museum. Other than organizing exhibitions, the project aims to create\na virtuous cycle of promoting, restoring and preserving Japan\u2019s beauty by\nutilizing a part of the proceeds from such events and contributions from our\nsponsors (listed below) to help restore precious artwork.
