{"id":6813,"date":"2020-11-12T19:29:28","date_gmt":"2020-11-12T10:29:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/localhost:10443\/en\/?p=6813"},"modified":"2020-11-12T19:32:31","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T10:32:31","slug":"tsumugu-repair-work-maeda-toshiies-war-coat-mended-with-washi-and-silk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tsumugu.yomiuri.co.jp\/en\/feature\/tsumugu-repair-work-maeda-toshiies-war-coat-mended-with-washi-and-silk\/","title":{"rendered":"TSUMUGU repair work: Maeda Toshiie&#8217;s war coat mended with washi and silk"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Tsumugu Project \u2014 jointly operated by Japan&#8217;s Agency for Cultural Affairs, Imperial Household Agency and national daily The Yomiuri Shimbun (Tokyo) \u2014 is providing financial support to help repair a <em>jinbaori<\/em> campaign jacket once donned by Maeda Toshiie, a 16th-century warlord who served under Oda Nobunaga.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government-designated important cultural property is owned by Maedaikutokukai Foundation, a public interest incorporated foundation in Tokyo which overlooks cultural properties belonging to the warlord&#8217;s descendants. People involved in the repair work, which began in fiscal 2019, gathered at a repair facility inside the Kyoto National Museum on Nov. 4, 2020, to hear a progress report from the repair experts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-tsumugu-blocks-modal-image wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/8e901a9706735a713df90b2a88a967a8.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>A portrait of Shoki, the demon-quelling god, is embroidered on the back of the campaign jacket (The Yomiuri Shimbun)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The battle surcoat from the Momoyama period in Japanese history is adorned with chrysanthemum embroidery on the front and a portrait of Shoki, the demon-quelling deity, embroidered on the other side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-tsumugu-blocks-modal-image wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/ee74ad13228242351aca6a8818a41f39.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Legend has it that the chrysanthemums were embroidered on the jacket by Maeda Toshiie&#8217;s wife Matsu (The Yomiuri Shimbun)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The jacket is well-preserved but has deteriorated on the surface over time. Repair experts have taken it apart to apply super thin <em>washi<\/em> paper on the back of the surface cloth to prevent further damage.
