Perfomed around a bonfire by dancers in patchwork costumes or black hoods, the ritual<em> <\/em>dance of Ugo in Akita Prefecture is said to be one of the three major <em>bon odori<\/em> (dances performed during the <em>bon <\/em>season, when ancestors are commemorated) of Japan and is listed as one of the <em>furyu odori<\/em>  (ritual folk dances) designated as UNESCO&#8217;s intangible cultural heritage in 2022. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other stage performances included those by &#8220;Amanojaku,&#8221; a group of <em>wadaiko<\/em> (traditional Japanese drum) performers based in Tokyo (Aug. 27 and Aug. 28)<em>,<\/em> and &#8220;Kokushimusou,&#8221; a group of dance performers dedicated to presenting the Yosakoi Naruko Dance of Kochi Prefecture with their wooden <em>naruko<\/em> clappers in hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>What you can do at Night Festival: <\/strong><\/p><p>\u2014 See the special exhibition \u201cJingoji: The Dawn of Shingon Buddhism\u201d in the Heiseikan<\/p><p> \u2014 See Tokyo National Museum&#8217;s regular exhibitions in the Honkan (Japanese Gallery) <\/p><p>\u2014 See <em>taiko<\/em>-drum and <em>bon odori<\/em>-dance stage performances <\/p><p>\u2014 Participate in Japanese culture workshops (calligraphy, designing using traditional patterns, making <em>netsuke<\/em>) at the Heiseikan lounge<\/p><p>\u2014 Play games (<em>shateki<\/em> shooting, pinball-like Smartball, bouncy-ball scooping, ring toss) near the Heiseikan entrance <\/p><p>\u2014 Try on <em>happi<\/em> coats<\/p><p>\u2014 Savor <em>wata ame<\/em> cotton candy and shaved ice <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n&nbsp;\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the Heiseikan lounge, visitors can learn how to design fans using traditional patterns or make <em>netsuke<\/em> (miniature sculptures), and even experience calligraphy.
