It also highlights objects that have been gifted to members of the Imperial family upon their duties abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The exhibition will open on July 9, 2024, and run through Sept. 1, 2024. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-tsumugu-blocks-modal-image wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/4aa01b7bbd378073d045a9ba199ef41d.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption><strong>\u201cPond and Insects\u201d<\/strong> <strong>from\u00a0<em>Colorful Realm of Living Beings<\/em>\u00a0(National Treasure)<\/strong><br\/>By Ito Jakuchu<br\/>Edo period, 18th century<br\/>(On display: Aug 6-Sep 1)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As noted, among the must-sees in the exhibition are the &#8220;Goose and Reeds&#8221; (on display: July 9-Aug. 4) and &#8220;Pond and Insects&#8221; (on display: Aug. 6-Sept. 1) from among the celebrated &#8220;Colorful Realm of Living Beings,&#8221; a series of thirty hanging scroll paintings said to be the chef-d&#8217;oeuvre of Edo period artist Ito Jakuchu (1716\u20131800). The series was presented to the Imperial Household in 1890 from Shokoku-ji temple in Kyoto, where all the hanging scrolls were initially kept and displayed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"790\" src=\"\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/99ffc84dfa184ee468ce308eac7ea0e8.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31143\"\/><figcaption><strong>Cat and Cotton Plants<\/strong><br>By Nagasawa Rosetsu<br>Edo period, 18th century<br>(On display: Jul 9-Aug 4)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another noteworthy work of Japanese painting from the Edo period is &#8220;Cat and Cotton Plants&#8221; by Nagasawa Rosetsu (1754-99), whose body of works includes a number of adorable representations of animals. Rosetsu used the Asian <em>kegaki<\/em> brushstroke technique to realistically depict the cat&#8217;s fur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"790\" src=\"\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/34de962b459a29897d9ef15103f537a4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31142\"\/><figcaption><strong>\u201cDance of the Seven Virtues\u201d from&nbsp;<em>Collection of Writings by Bai Juyi<\/em><\/strong><br>Attributed to Minamoto no Toshifusa<br>Heian period, 12th century<br>(Different sections to go on display over two rotations)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"790\" src=\"\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/75f16c54d66b50acd45753204572b2bb.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31144\"\/><figcaption><strong>Plants and Insects (detail)<\/strong><br>By Shen Quan<br>Qing dynasty (China), 18th century<br>(Different sections to go on display over two rotations)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>*<strong>Sannomaru Shozokan<\/strong>: In 1989, the first year of the Heisei era, the then Emperor (currently, Emperor Emeritus) and his mother Empress Kojun (1903-2000) donated the artistic treasures \u2014 paintings, calligraphy, craft, etc. \u2014 that had been passed down in the Imperial Household up until Emperor Showa\u2019s time (1926\u201389) to the Japanese government. Sannomaru Shozokan was opened in the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace in November 1993 to store, preserve, research and exhibit these items. The collection gradually grew as other members of the Imperial Household left or donated their precious belongings to the state. The museum was temporarily closed in 2019 for renovations to expand its storage and exhibition space, but since then has partially opened a newly built facility to hold exhibitions such as this one. Renovations are  due to be completed in 2026. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">20th-century carving<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"790\" src=\"\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/76515b444d5b7a85c2e14cd705f9ddce.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31145\"\/><figcaption><strong>Puppy and Feather Brush<\/strong><br>Late Meiji-Taisho era, 20th century<br>(On display throughout the exhibition)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Puppy and Feather Brush,&#8221; a 20th-century work of carved ivory, will go on view in the &#8220;Sculpture and Decorative Arts&#8221; section of the exhibition.
