A special exhibition marking the 850th anniversary of the birth of priest Shinran*, the founder of the Jodo Shinshu school of Japanese Buddhism (True Pure Land Buddhism), will be held in Kyoto in the spring of 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shinran (1173-1262)<\/strong><\/p>

– Born: Kyoto
– Joins Buddhist priesthood at the age of 9
– Trains at the Tendai school monastery on Mt. Hiei
– Abandons monastic life to follow Honen (1133\u20131212), the founder of Jodoshu (Pure Land Buddhism)
– Following Honen’s ways results in banishment to Echigo province in modern day Niigata Prefecture (later pardoned)
– Resides in the Kanto region before returning to Kyoto
– Dies at the age of 90
– Magnum opus: “Kyogyoshinsho” (Teaching, Practice, Faith and Attainment)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

“Shinran: The Life and Legacy of the Founder of Shin Buddhism,” the special exhibition scheduled to open on March 25, 2023, at the Kyoto National Museum, features a wide array of works including writings by Shinran himself, portrait paintings and sculptures, and illustrated handscrolls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the items to go on display are 11 designated national treasures and about 70 designated important cultural properties. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
