Entitled, &#8220;Chanoyu: Tea in the Cultural Life of Kyoto,&#8221; the exhibition will run through Dec. 4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"790\" src=\"\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/34de962b459a29897d9ef15103f537a4-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16423\"\/><figcaption>National treasure<br>Tea bowl, O-ido type, known as &#8220;Kizaemon&#8221;<br>Koho-an, Kyoto<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The exhibition will not only feature masterpiece tea bowls, teapots and other utensils associated with Kyoto, where <em>chanoyu<\/em> flourished, but also paintings and calligraphy that tell of its culture (245 works in total, including 101 items registered as either a national treasure or an important cultural property). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote style=\"text-align:center\" class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p> <strong>Chanoyu: Tea in the Cultural Life of Kyoto<\/strong> <\/p><p> Oct 8 (Sat) &#8211; Dec 4 (Sun), 2022 <\/p><p>Kyoto National Museum<br>(Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto)<\/p><p>*See outline below for more info<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The items on display include &#8220;Yohen tenmoku&#8221; (Southern Song Dynasty, 12th-13th century) of Daitoku-ji temple\u2019s Ryoko-in subtemple in Kyoto &#8212; a government-designated national treasure and one of only a few Yohen tenmoku tea bowls remaining in the world (only three remain in Japan) &#8212; and an O-ido type tea bowl known as &#8220;Kizaemon,&#8221; a designated national treasure from Daitoku-ji\u2019s Koho-an subtemple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"790\" src=\"\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/34de962b459a29897d9ef15103f537a4-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18702\"\/><figcaption>Tea utensils are put on display together with paintings, calligraphy and other artwork to trace the long history of Japanese <i>chanoyu<\/i>. (Photo by Kazuki Matsuura)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ido type tea bowls, introduced to Japan from the Korean Peninsula, were utensils prized by those who practiced the simple <em>wabi-cha<\/em> style ceremonies associated with tea master Senno no Rikyu (1522-91).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The special exhibition, organized by Japan&#8217;s national daily newspaper The Yomiuri Shimbun and others, is held to mark the 70th anniversary of the first publication of the Osaka edition of the paper.
