The big-hearted\neditorial staff in charge said that I could write just about anything: reviews,\non buying and selling artwork, restoration of artwork, art education, research,\netc. Well, we got together before the web portal opened, and as I laid out the\nvarious things I could write about, the editorial staff got a bit greedy and decided\nthe scope of this column should not be limited to just introducing exhibitions and\npursuing antique art dealers, but should include anything, as long as it had\nsomething to do with Japanese art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The reason why the themes I care about goes\nin different directions is because what I have been doing in recent years goes\nbeyond the job description of a writer\/editor \u2013 that is, drawing up plans,\ngathering information, then writing an article \u2013 although the work is still in\nand around Japanese art. As such, I\u2019m going to write about what I have been up\nto lately in this first installment, which should serve as a self-introduction\nas well as a salutation to my readers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If likened to the field of science&#8230;<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Making plans, writing articles, editing,\ncoordinating, publicizing, judging, lecturing and so on is what I do, and it\nmay seem all disorganized. But roughly lumped together, the core of my work\nlies around \u201ctranslating\u201d hard-core Japanese art so it can be effectually passed\non to non-specialists; or serving as a bridge between people and things involved\nin Japanese art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the field of science and technology,\nthere is a profession called a \u201cscience communicator.\u201d The National Museum of\nNature and Science in Ueno, Tokyo, has a science communicator training program\nwhich defines the profession as \u201cproviding the opportunity for anyone to think\nabout science proactively and to act on it, and connecting people, or science\nand society, in order to foster a sustainable society where humankind, nature\nand science can coexist.\u201d Hokkaido University\u2019s CoSTEP, or the Communication in\nScience &amp; Technology Education &amp; Research Program, defines science\ncommunicators as those \u201cwho can establish two-way communication between experts\nand the public over societal challenges regarding science and technology, and\ncan play the role of effectually communicating to people across all levels of\nsociety the social importance of science and technology, and the significance\nand joy of learning in these fields.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am no \u201cscience communicator,\u201d but I think\nmy current job is to assume such a role in the realm of Japanese art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Serving as a location coordinator for an ad shoot, I once had to find a tea room because the staff wanted to take a glass of whiskey \u201cin front of a nice wall &#8230; like in a tea room.\u201d It wasn\u2019t easy. They wanted to place a bottle and a glass and nothing else in front of a clay wall and make them look nice, a wall with a mood that wasn\u2019t too rough nor too sober, and if possible, little known. I managed to collect permits for three tea rooms \u2013 two of which were designated important cultural properties \u2013 and made sure the staff did not do any damage by giving them a lecture on how to handle equipment and such, and stayed on site day after day, in the early hours of the morning in mid-winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On another front, a hotel preparing to\nnewly open wants real Japanese artwork on display in their guest rooms and\npublic space so guests from abroad can experience Japanese culture. &nbsp;With a view to opening the hotel in early 2020,\nthe project \u2013 which involves coming up with the conceptual design, selecting\nand purchasing the artwork, gauging where to safely place hanging scrolls and three-dimensional\nwork, and producing installation art in collaboration with contemporary artists\n\u2013 has been going on for several years and is now coming close to its final\nstage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Making feature pages for a magazine can get\nnasty<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, my main job has always been with\nmagazines, and so I still write for \u201cWaraku\u201d (published by Shogakukan) on a\nregular basis on how to appreciate national treasures, and am put in charge of\na cover story or special feature for some magazine about once a year. Some of\nyou may have seen the special feature on Japanese swords carried last autumn on\n\u201cBRUTUS\u201d (published by Magazine House) or the one on <em>Yohen Tenmoku<\/em> tea\nbowls on the same magazine this spring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1184\" src=\"\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/top_mari001.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1447\"\/><figcaption>The \u201cBRUTUS\u201d magazine (May 1, 2019 issue) featuring Yohen Tenmoku tea bowls<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Usually, the fun of making a magazine is in\nthe editors and the writers ganging up for that purpose. But as far as making a\nspecial feature on some kind of art for BRUTUS is concerned, I have been at it\nalmost all alone for the past several years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I do not just write, but also do the\nplanning, and a small group of just two editors and I puts together the\n60-to-70-page special feature. Just one writer or as many as ten, the time given\nto make a special feature, however, is all the same. If there are several\nwriters, they can hustle together to make the deadline, but if it\u2019s just you,\nyou might as well give up on resting or sleeping and just work on. The editors,\nproofreaders and the people in charge of printing also have to push through.\nBut because the readers and the editing staff alike are amused by the somewhat\nbiased product unfitting for a magazine, this unorthodox style of producing a\nspecial feature has persisted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My task does not end there, though. If the\nspecial feature is based on a large exhibition, I more than often get involved\nin promoting the exhibition itself as well. There is much to do throughout the\nexhibition period: producing related goods, appearing on art related TV\nprograms or internet programs, giving a lecture at the venue or making an\nappearance at an event, planning a special viewing tour in collaboration with railway\ncompanies and tourist agencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">My college major: international relations<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What I have written so far, is only a\ntidbit of the whole story. If I had just studied art history and joined the art\nworld as a curator or researcher, I wouldn\u2019t have become the jack-of-all trades\nI am now. To tell you the truth, until I graduated from college, I had nothing\nto do with Japanese art. I majored in international relations at the\nInternational Christian University, so there was no \u201cJapan\u201d involved, nor\n\u201cart.\u201d So how did things turn out this way?
